weekend treat: avocado shake

What did you have for breakfast?  my friend asked me.
"Uhhhm... an avocado shake" I answered.
And her face did not hide the disgust when she heard AVOCADO SHAKE like I said something politically incorrect.

Truth to tell, I also reacted the same way the first time I heard about avocado used as a dip (guacomole) or avocado slices in sandwiches.  Talk about cultural differences!  But through the years, I learned to love avocado in new dishes, like in savory and spicy guacamole, just as much as I love avocado slobbered with cream and ice.

My friend gave me a piece of avocado (thanks Kelly!) and I was torn whether I should make a shake or a guac.  But the result of my poll in my facebook page dictated I should make a shake... with temperatures rising to the 90's I grabbed some ice cubes, vanilla ice cream and a few minutes later,  I was sipping a delightful shake.  The smooth, thick and creamy texture transported me to avocado heaven.

After a long week, you too deserve a sweet treat.  It's avocado season, so why not make yourself a creamy, velvety shake that will lift you up!

Avocado Shake

Ingredients
1 piece avocado, pitted and sliced
9 pcs. ice cubes
2 tbsp heavy cream
2 tbsp condensed milk
1 scoop of vanilla ice cream

Procedure:
Put ice in a blender together with all the other ingredients except avocado slices.   Pulse or blend them together.  Add avocado slices then pulse again.  I  want  some avocado bits so I put it last.

I am submitting this to this month's Kulinarya. June theme is to bring to the table a recipe that is distinctively Pinoy.  Thank you Cherrie and Tina for hosting this month's theme.  Please come visit all the other KCC members who took part in this month's challenge.

  1. What a beautiful green you achieved! I've had an avocado... some sort of drink before. I'm not quite sure what you'd call it. I get it at my local boba shop but mmm, it's so damn good! I hope this helped cool you off during the sweltering heat!

  2. it's funny how my husband said it's not as "green" as other avocado shake and I told him that's as real green as I could get. haha. I'm glad you love the "green-ness" of it.
    Thanks for visiting!

  6. Wow, Malou! This avocado shake is "sweet, and sassy"...anybody that does not know there's avocado in there would be in for a huge surprise; the addition of the vanilla ice cream and the sweetened condensed milk certainly camoflages the avocado, and makes it yummylicious ( I for one has to have a fruity shake) and this is a superb and genius healthy yet sweet shake. Yummm!!

  9. I think we have the same experience, when we migrated here in NZ I was shocked to see avocado sliced on bread, it was weird at first but when I tried it, it was really good. I also let them try the avocado shake, like me their reaction was funny as they never tried it in something sweet but once they sipped it they enjoyed it. I love avocado shakes!

  15. I used to hate it as a child. My dad would prep avocado shakes for us and I never really enjoyed it. Now I just love it! I love guacamole, and yes, love it in sandwiches, too!

  16. I just love avocados and prefer it sweet as in a shake or ice cream. Avocados is expensive here in the UK. So unlike back home when we buy it by the kilo. Delicious and posh looking shake you have there Malou. Just would love to have some.

  21. Love my avocado mashed with condensed milk. Sometimes I add slices of bananas and that sums up my breakfast come avocado season. :) Likewise prefer it sweet than savory. That's the pinoy in us, I guess. :)
