weekday easy: seared tuna belly

The guitar has been unstrung, now quietly sitting in its case against the black book shelf. The ukulele sits by the end table and it has been at rest since January. The white linens are still crisp and sleekly folded, the closets are clean, shoes are on the shoe rack where they belong. But guess what??? In a few days, the bed will be left unmade,  there will be shoes in the hallway, the sound from the frets of guitar and the ukulele will echo throughout the house. Yes I am thrilled to no end... my kids are coming home!

Like any excited mom, I'm sure you know the drill:  Clear closet space... check. Plan the itinerary... check.  Do some grocery shopping plus menu planning and the list goes on and on. Having a long list of things to do, the plan to work on a post today has been moved to the back burner. And I'm sure you'll forgive me for doing this.

But fret not, because today, I'm bringing Lanie back. I am sharing one of her recipes that I still vividly recall. This dish was served along with a wide array of other entrees, but the tuna belly was the highlight of the table.  The moist, sweet and salty charred tuna belly melts in your mouth like no other...  It is easy to prepare too, so it's perfect for a weekday meal.

Seared Tuna Belly

2-3 lbs. Tuna belly (you could buy these at Asian specialty stores)

For marinade:
3 tbsp soy sauce
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 inch ginger root (pounded and sliced)

For the sauce:
4 tsp soy sauce
4 tsp Worcestershire sauce
4 tsp sugar
1/2 cup soup stock
2 tsp chinese mustard (optional)
3 cloves garlic, minced
1 medium red onions, sliced
1 stalk green onions, sliced

Marinade Tuna Belly overnight or for at least 4 hours.  Drain the marinade.  Meanwhile lightly coat an iron cast skillet with cooking oil.  When hot, sear Tuna for about 3-4 minutes on each side.  Set aside.

For the sauce

Saute garlic, onions and green onions together on a skillet.  Add the remaining ingredients.  Let it simmer.     Pour over the tuna belly slice.  This dish is best served while hot... enjoy!

  1. Malou, can you pass the rice please? And also please have a glass of coke filled with ice cubes. Definitely reminds me of those lunches with family in the Philippines.

  4. This is beautiful and worthy of a "welcome home" dinner. I remember those days - now the kids live in the Twin Cities and I see them more than the college years. Savor and dish up another helping.

    1. Im happy to know that your kids are around the area. I will have to wait a few more years before my kids will come live near us too. I told them that we should live within 10 miles haha... which I don't think will never come to fruition haha.
      Thanks for coming over Claudia,

  6. Tuna here is expensive so this would be a luxury to me if I made one, but for now I will just droll over it.

  7. My dear friend Malou-I soooo enjoy your posts, your enthusiasms your funny comments you always leave on my blog, and I adore your specialty Asian dishes. Since I'm quite sure our Asian market does not sell tuna belly, I will either make it with a nice seared tuna steak, and have the sauce on the side...also, I was thinking to make it with squid!
I love the marinade, and sauce recipe...copying and pasting it right now. (will surprise myself to see if it works out)

    1. I think they sell milk fish belly Elisabeth. it's not as fleshy though but I just thought the "belly" part is what I'm trying to emphasize here. LOL> but honestly tuna steak will come close. Go make it work! I hope you will love it!

  10. Oh my, this is MY kind of meal! I love the flavors you put into this dish. I must try your recipe. Can I use any other fish belly like bangus? Or will it turn out differently? Thanks for sharing, Malou. And thanks for the sweet greetings on my FB page ~ I wanted to comment back but FB's timeline doesn't allow me after a day has lapsed. And that's another post for another day :-) So glad to be enjoying your delish recipes! Enjoy your kids' being home, I share in your joy!

  11. 'Fish belly' - hehe. that's weird concept to me for some reason. This looks really good - like a dish you would order at a restaurant!

  12. This looks simply fantastic. I've actually never had a chance to eat/cook with tuna belly simply because I haven't been able to find any. I'll have to hunt some down. Those big slices of green onions are the perfect counterpoint to the fish.

  13. Hey Malou!

I made this today for a friend's birthday dinner and it was a big hit. I used some bluefin tuna belly that I caught off of the Baja coast a couple of weeks ago.

Thank you for the recipe. I am now a big fan, and I told anyone who asked where I got the recipe.
